Quests, Food Buffs and Bentos

How quests are posted and found, who hands them out, what each quest menu holds, how to read a quest card, and how to pack bentos (food buffs) before you go.

Bentos (party buffs)

The basics

The food NPC's menu: Pack Bento, Buy Ingredients, Sell Items, Buy to Box, Use Bento Toggle.
The food NPC's menu

A lunchbox, or bento, is a meal that gives a buff to everyone in your party. You set it when you post a quest. There are many foods you can buy and many ways to combine them.

You pack a bento at the food NPC: the dedicated food store in town or in the Caravan area, or the Guild Store Cat in the Guild Hall.

Once you have made a meal, it is added to a quick list. While you post a quest, press X on a controller or Z on a keyboard to prepare any meal on that list at once.

The quest posting screen with the rice ball icon marked in red. A note says the icon appears when a food buff is set for the quest, and X or Z changes or checks the buffs.
The rice ball icon shows that a bento is set

The game remembers your meal between quests. If you chose the right food the first time, you do not need to choose again until the season changes.

Combinations

The tables below list the basic combinations. Always post quests with buffs at least as good as these when you can. Each meal is two ingredients. Which meal is best depends on the season of the quest (warm, cold or breeding).

SeasonIngredientsEffect
WarmFist Rice + Spirit Mushrooms (shown in the guide as Demon Mushrooms)+50 HP / +50 Stamina
Fist Rice + Predator Honey+50 HP / +25 Stamina / +5 Attack

SR food

SR food becomes available at Style Rank (HR6). It gives far stronger effects than normal food. For example, some combinations give -60 Health, +50 Stamina, Attack Up (Large) and Defense Up (Medium). That puts your party straight into Adrenaline range for the hunt. Other combinations are made for normal, non-Adrenaline quests and give +50 Health and more.

You cannot buy SR food at the normal food stores. You get it as a reward from some special quests and from Hunter Guide tasks. You can also buy it with GCP (see Rastas in House and AI Companions) or with Hunter Festival Points (see Hunter Festival).

Server types

The server list with five tabs: HR1-4, HR5 and G Rank, Private Towns, Private Bars and Cheat Servers. Notes explain what each tab is for.

The server you are on decides which quests you can take. The Capcom servers had five types, each with its own tab:

  • The HR1-4 tab (the Beginners' servers). You cannot post HR5 or above, or G Rank, quests here.
  • The HR5 / G Rank tab (the Standard servers).
  • Private Towns and Private Bars are basically mini towns that replace the Rasta Bar. You cannot use the Rasta Bar on these servers.
  • The Cheat Servers are meant to boost players to G Rank content as quickly as possible. Compared with the normal grind, they amount to cheating.

To change server, go to the town entrance and pick the second option. Do this if you cannot take the quests you want.

Quest givers

Guild Master

The Guild Master, an NPC in a red and white robe standing on town steps.

The Guild Master hands out Gook quests and manages Style Rank. This NPC also gives Medals for killing large numbers of a monster species. You trade the Medals in at the Combination NPC for charms.

Story and Item Trading Guildie

The Story and Item Trading Guildie, an NPC in a yellow outfit behind a blue counter.

This guildie gives the lowest-rank players their quests after the first part of the tutorial. She also gives out any story-based event quests that are running. She trades items too, and trading with her is the only way to get some materials.

Main Quests Guildie

The Main Quests Guildie, an NPC with grey hair in an orange outfit behind a blue counter.

The Standard Quests Guild Girl gives all types of normal quests, right up to G Rank.

Other quest NPCs are the Pink Guild Girl (daily quests, see below) and the Blue Guild Girl (Arena quests and the Diva Defense, see Diva Defense).

Quest menus

If the quest menus look nothing like the ones below, you probably need to swap to a different server (see Server types). Not every quest type is always available. You unlock some of them as you reach the rank needed to sign them. Some servers also limit the quests you can take: the first-tab servers only allow quests that need HR1 to HR4, and you need another tab for HR5 or G Rank quests.

The main quest menu has these entries: Main Quest Menu, Favourites, Quest History and Search. Under Hunter Quests there is a sub-menu for each of ★1 (HR1), ★2 (HR2), ★3 (HR3) and ★4 (HR4).

Urgent quests appear only when needed. A red exclamation mark above the NPC's head shows them. There is no HR6 urgent. After you have done the two keys, talk to the G Rank NPC to get your Shantien urgent.

Other Quests

This section holds most quests with rewards unique enough to be separated, but not necessarily "special".

  • Notes Quests give items such as Neo Notes, used on things like Tower or FX armour pieces.
  • Special Material Quests give materials for event items that have been made full time. The G8 quests are very easy weapons to upgrade and are good at G Rank.
  • G Deco Quests give the strongest non-G Rank decorations in the game. They often have a total of 15 points across 3 skills.
  • Pugi Cuff Quests give materials for standard non-G Rank Pugi Cuffs. These are the equivalent of Talismans in the mainline games. See House and AI Companions.
  • Long Term Quests are designed to be carried out over a long period, such as mass gathering.
  • Hunting Skill Quests rank everyone who takes part with a score and declare a winner at the end.

Scheduled Quests

This section holds quests on a changing schedule, or otherwise notable enough to deserve their own section.

  • Active Events are quests tied to events running on the server. New monsters with Gou variants appear here if they have event quests, along with HR5.
  • Exotic Quests are quests against mainline imports such as Zinogre or Deviljho. Exotic monsters always appear in this section.
  • Daily Quests are quests you can take every day after talking to the Pink Guild Girl and choosing the last option to claim NP.

The live event quest pool on our server is listed on Events, and every quest has an English entry in the Quest catalog.

Special Quests

  • Ranking Rewards give special earring materials when you hit HR milestones.
  • Pawprint and Annual quests give materials for anything that needs Pawprint Coins. They also give rewards for cashing in 48 weeks' worth of EX and HL stamps.
  • Hiden Stone Deliveries give 1 piece worth of weapon souls for each stone you deliver. Choose with care, because the quest is not limited to one weapon.
  • Superior Ticket Quests need Superior Tickets. On the Capcom servers you got these from the real-money lottery, by buying them directly or from events.
  • Premium Quests need a premium course and have higher than usual rewards. The guide's author rates them poorly and says premium should not be used just to reach them. Every account here has the Premium course (not tested in game), and our quest catalogue holds 58 Premium Quests (see Quests).
  • Gathering Quests are map deliveries on all the non-G maps.

Ranking points

Finishing quests gives you several kinds of points, depending on which NPCs you bring on the quest.

PointsHow you earn themWhat they do
Partner Rank PointsBased on the quest's GRP or HRP valueRaise your partner's PR, up to PR999
Partner Weapon Rank PointsBased on the quest's GRP or HRP valueRaise your partner's Weapon Rank, up to 999
Partnyaa Rank PointsBased on the quest's GRP or HRP valueRaise your Partnyaa's Rank, up to 999
Guild Contribution Points1 per minute in a quest while you have someone's rasta contractedSpendable points
G Rank PointsBased on the quest's GRP valueRaise your GR rating, up to GR899
G Style Rank PointsBased on the quest's GRP valueRaise your GSR rating, up to GSR999 per weapon

You can gain points faster by going on GHC hunts, using certain Sigil Skills, listening to the Diva Song, using the Log In Boost, or using Premium.

Normal non-G HC quests with a Rare-12 weapon, once you have reached G Rank, should multiply all of your NPC ranking point gains.

The quest card

The quest card appears when you hover over a quest in the quest list. It has 8 pages and every page has useful information. The ones you will use most are page 1 (core details), page 2 (money rewards), page 3 (material rewards), page 5 (season and time) and page 8 (location).

The other pages show smaller details:

  • Page 4 shows the preset armour for quests that have one (head, chest, arms, waist). Armour and weapon are only preset on some event quests.
  • Page 6 lists which weapon types are allowed. Faded weapon types are banned. Weapon-restricted quests block NPCs other than Legendaries.
  • Page 7 lists banned weapon types. For example, in recent hunting contests you can only use Origin weapons, so every other weapon type is listed here.
  • Page 8 also shows the standard quest flavour text, such as the contractor and background info.

Quest areas and objectives

Areas

Quests take place in these areas:

AreaAreaArea
JungleDesertSwamp
Snowy MountainsVolcanoTower
Forest and HillsGreat ForestArena
GorgeHighlandsTidal Island
Flower FieldPolar SeaBattlefield
Large ArenaBaseFortress
White LakeTop of Great ForestCloud Viewing Fortress

Objectives

Quest goals are made from these parts:

  • Deliver, Hunt, Kill (slay), Capture, Repel, Break, Cut and Fish.
  • Break and Cut objectives can name many parts: Wing, Head (including crest), Tail, Beak, Horn, Shell, Chest, Pincers, Tentacles, Ears, Claws, Fin, Head and Body, and Back.

Sub-objectives

Like some mainline games, Frontier often has sub-objectives. Each has its own reward pool of up to 4 slots, in blue or green slots on the first page of rewards. Completing one plays a jingle and shows it as completed on your quest status page.

Finishing a sub-objective lets you end the quest at once. Sleep in the bed at the Basecamp and choose the second option. This matters at G Rank, where not every map has a gathering quest but you may still need to gather. Killing a handful of minions is much better than fighting a large monster or delivering eggs.

Searching for quests

The quest search screen with fields for text search, monster, location, monster type, HR limit, flags, HRP reward, zeny reward and reward string.

Choose the green option on a quest-giving NPC to open the search. You can search by typing in the main text search or the reward string search, or just use the preset options. You can filter by monster, location, monster type, HR limit, flags, HRP reward and zeny reward.

Pasting Chinese text into the text or reward search may not work, depending on your locale settings. Try pasting from a Notepad window or from a browser such as Firefox or Edge, or use the Character Map program that comes with Windows.

The guide's Google Document has a full list of the monsters and search parameters for both HR/SR and GR. For English quest names and objectives on our server, use the Quest catalog.

Advertising quests

The usual format for a quest advert is: @here / Quest Type / Monster Name / other info / @re. If you can paste into the game, you only need to paste the right text into the chat field.

General terms

TermMeaning
@hereMakes a link to where you are on the game servers
@reAdds the total number of slots left for the quest
有便當 / 有飯 / 飯Have a food buff. Useful with numbers for Adrenaline, such as -50 HP or -60 HP
破頭Break Head
斷尾Cut Tail
求幫Seeking Help
來麻棍Bring Paralysis Tonfas. Other statuses and weapons use the same format, for example 來毒雙 for Bring Poison Duals
秘火飯SR Adrenaline Food
剛Gou
遷悠Exotic

You can also just write HR with a number after it to advertise the rank.

Conquest terms

  • Lv200 and similar: the level of the monster. This is needed when advertising a Conquest, because you have to be at or below the host's level to advance your own levels.
  • +10 / +15: how many levels the host gains if they do not cart.
  • @here 剛金塵龍 斷尾 有飯 @re! means: Gou Garuba Daora, requesting Tail Cut, have food buff.
  • @here G遷悠 雷狼龍 破頭斷尾 有便當 有飯 @re! means: G Rank Zinogre, Tail Cut and Head Break, have food buff, requesting help.

Because there are no bans for English players, and the game officially covers regions that do not speak Traditional Chinese, you can also advertise with direct translations or rough descriptions:

  • @here 剛噬血龍! @re!
  • @here HR5 shixuelong!
  • @re! @here HR5 Blood Sucking Dragon! @re!

Quest rewards

After any quest you receive rewards based on the quest. They are always shown in the same format: a prompt to send items to the item pouch, send them to the item box, send everything to the item box, or sell the remainder, with a timer, and then a reward grid.

Caravan, Guild and Diva quests

All information on Caravan is in Caravan.

Guild Quests

Guild Quests are taken in the Guild Hall. They give Guild Tickets, which you can spend on various pieces of equipment exclusive to them. As well as standard Guild Quests, you can add sub-quests. Talk to the Quest Cat again after signing a Guild Quest and choose the 3rd option. A second, smaller quest icon above your character's normal quest icon shows that a sub-quest is selected.

Diva Quests

A wooden gate with a cloth banner, the entrance to the Diva's area off the main town steps.
The way to the Diva

You find the Diva in a side area of the main town, on the steps leading to the square. Her questline gives materials for Diva-exclusive equipment, which is extremely good. The first chapter has no requirements. The second chapter needs you to be at Style Rank. Every chapter after that needs G Rank.

English objectives and rewards for the chapters are in the guide's Google Document. You may have to talk to more people than the document lists. See G Rank for the Diva Buffs, which you can only use after you reach G Rank.

That guide describes Capcom's old official servers; we reworded it, laid it out for Hunsterverse and added the "On Hunsterverse" notes (all of them: Hunsterverse vs the old servers).
